Maple City was originally known as Peg Town because of the shoe peg factory that once dominated the area in the 1860s. What's a shoe peg? Well, it was small peg made from the area's maple timber that was used to attach a sole to the rest of the shoe. Today, Maple City has a great community of farmers, entrepreneurs, and other amazing people.

Grab some phenomenal pizza, calzones, and sandwiches at Peg Town Station. They also have some of the best gluten-free food on the Leelanau Peninsula. Or, go across town to Market 22 for meats roasted in-house, dough made fresh daily, beer, wine, and liquor at this pizza / deli / bakery / market all in one.

Take your food from above to the 9 gorgeous miles of shoreline that wraps around Good Harbor Bay, part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It's a perfect beach day here with plenty of space to spread out and amazing places such as creeks running out of the forests, across the beach, and into the lake that especially magical to children.
