Legend has it that many years ago, a mother bear and her two cubs were caught in the middle of a forest fire. To escape the flames, they headed towards the shoreline of Lake Michigan, swimming tirelessly towards safety. Sadly, only the mother bear made it to the shore. Looking back, she realized that her cubs couldn’t keep up and had perished in the water.
Feeling a deep sense of loss, the mother bear climbed to the top of a nearby bluff and gazed out over the vast blue water. With a heavy heart, she lay down to rest and fell into an eternal sleep. It’s said that her body gradually transformed into the dune formation that we see today – the iconic “Sleeping Bear.”
Although it’s just a legend, the story has been passed down for generations by Native American tribes in the area. When the park was established in 1970, the name Sleeping Bear was chosen in honor of this story and its powerful connection to the area.
